The rank of Sith Acolyte is a position that denotes full membership in the Sith Order. The rank is similar to the Jedi rank of Knight. Members with this rank have completed their training, but are not yet deemed seasoned enough to train other apprentices. Still, Acolytes serve as the backbone of the Sith armies.

After much debate, the Sith Council decided to add the position of Sith Acolyte to the list of ranks. This was because, at the time, many Masters were promoting incapable Apprentices who were training others. Therefore, to help stem the tide of unqualified members actually training others, the Council created a position that would require the vote of the Council to attain the position.
